China’s NEV Sales May Hit 16.5 Million Next Year, Think Tank Predicts China’s NEV Sales May Hit 16.5 Million Next Year, Think Tank Predicts

(Yicai) Dec. 31 -- New energy vehicle sales in China are expected to reach about 16.5 million next year, according to the vice chairman of third-party think tank China EV100.

About 15 million NEVs will be sold in the country, and the other 1.5 million will be exported, Zhang Yongwei, who is also secretary-general of China EV100, said at a media briefing in Beijing yesterday.

Between January and November, passenger new energy vehicle sales jumped over 38 percent to more than 10.7 million units from a year earlier, crossing the annual 10 million mark for the first time, according to figures from the China Passenger Car Association.

NEV adoption will exceed 55 percent next year, Zhang also said. It exceeded 50 percent for the first time this July and has remained above that level since, CPCA data also showed.

The intelligence level of NEVs will enter a new phase of rapid acceleration next year, he noted, adding that compared with their long process of electrification, the adoption of intelligent features was fast from the outset, mainly because of the early use of high-end smart technologies in low- and medium-priced models.

The adoption rate of passenger vehicles with Level-2 or higher assisted driving capabilities will probably near 65 percent next year, up from 56 percent this year, Zhang said. The widespread use of semi-automated driving systems is expected to be complete within the next two years, he noted.

The new generations of EV power packs such as solid-state batteries, are entering the mass production stage, according to Zhang. "Based on research conducted by experts and China EV100, small batches of solid-state batteries can be put into practical use between 2027 and 2028,” he said.

By that time, the primary barrier to the widespread adoption of solid-state batteries will be cost, rather than technical challenges, Zhang said.
