China's Car Buyers Griped About Price Wars, EVs, and Smart Features in 2024 China's Car Buyers Griped About Price Wars, EVs, and Smart Features in 2024

(Yicai) Jan. 3 -- Price wars, electric vehicles, and intelligent technologies emerged as the main sources of consumer complaints in China's automotive market last year, according to a leading automotive complaints website.

Complaints platform Qctsw.Com recorded over 23,680 cases in 2024, a nearly 3 percent increase from the year before, though remaining below levels seen in the previous four years, according to a report released by the platform yesterday.

Intensified market competition led to aggressive price cuts by manufacturers, affecting their profit margins and triggering numerous complaints. Many vehicle owners reported significant price reductions shortly after their purchases, leading to rapid depreciation. Additional complaints centered on vehicle body rust and reduced feature sets.

As EV sales surged, related complaints rose to 6,150 cases. Key issues included battery-related problems such as power loss and charging failures, as well as concerns about driving range. The report highlighted that as pure electric vehicles age, battery-related issues are likely to increase. Industry observers question whether manufacturers are prepared for large-scale battery replacement demands.

Issues with vehicle system updates and intelligent driving features have become increasingly prevalent. Complainants argue that some automakers are implementing immature technologies in their newer models.

The report emphasizes that manufacturers and dealerships should establish effective communication channels and enhance service quality to address customer concerns.

China's auto sales reached 27.9 million units in the first 11 months of last year, up 4 percent year over year, per the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. EV sales rose 36 percent to nearly 11.3 million units. According to data released by the public security ministry last July, China's total vehicle ownership stands at 345 million, including 24.7 million EVs.
