(Yicai Global) Jan. 3 – The Chinese box office takings reached CNY45.7 billion (USD6.5 billion) in 2016, up 3.7 percent year-on-year, China's media regulator announced. The box office takings for Chinese films totaled CNY26.6 billion, accounting for 58.3 percent of the total.
The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television said 2016 saw 1.372 billion viewers in urban cinemas, up 8.9 percent year-on-year. China produced a total of 944 movies last year. In total, 84 movies materialized a box office revenue of more than CNY100 million with 43 of them being made by Chinese producers.
China is currently the second highest-grossing cinema territory in the world behind the Hollywood, but the 2016 box office takings as announced by the regulator fail to realize its ambition to close in on or overtake the US box office total, which is over USD10 billion.
