Tencent Buys Two ACGN Games From ByteDance, Source Says Tencent Buys Two ACGN Games From ByteDance, Source Says

(Yicai) March 15 -- Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings has bought two games in the ACGN genre developed by studios under the gaming arm of TikTok owner ByteDance, a source told Yicai.

Tencent’s Saluosi Network Technology Shenzhen will take over Shenzhen Gravity Studio's ACGN tactical game project S1 and Jiangnan Studio's ACGN open-world game project J5 from Nuverse, the source said yesterday. ACGN is short for animation, comic, game, and novel.

Established last December, Saluosi is owned by Tencent-backed Guangxi Tencent Venture Capital, according to corporate data platform Tianyancha.

Tencent is the best option among large Chinese game developers for operating capability and funds, said Zhang Shule, a game industry analyst. Buying ByteDance's games can fill Tencent's long-standing gap in ACGN titles, Zhang added.

Shenzhen-based Tencent has been paying attention to ACGN games, one of its weak points, another industry source told Yicai.

Nuverse drastically shrank its business at the end of last November. ByteDance will spin off well-performing games while ensuring their operation and cancel all games in development except for a small number of innovative and related technology projects, the Beijing-based firm noted.

In January, Late Post reported that Nuverse was in talks with Tencent about the sale of multiple games. Nuverse said no deal with Tencent had been finalized, and it was also negotiating with several other buyers.
