China’s Modernization Can Enlighten Other Countries, Lesotho’s Ex-PM Says China’s Modernization Can Enlighten Other Countries, Lesotho’s Ex-PM Says

(Yicai) Nov.24 -- China's experience of rapid economic growth over the past few decades is helpful and can enlighten other countries, according to the former prime minister of Lesotho.

The world is undergoing major changes, and a new order is emerging, Moeketsi Majoro said during the 2023 World Conference on China Studies today. In this process, China, as an emerging power, must assume greater global responsibilities, he added.

China’s path to modernization which focused on development has not only benefited its 1.4 billion people but has also fostered global connectedness and multilateralism, Majoro said. There are many conflicts and injustices in today's world, and it is necessary for a large country like China to deal with them from the perspective of mankind, Majoro said, adding that if there is such a responsible powerhouse to deal with them, many things can be done better.

Lesotho, which has an area of 30,300 square kilometers, is the largest country within another country in the world as it is surrounded by South Africa. But it is very underdeveloped. Due to the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the national poverty rate is as high as 50 percent and at least 40 percent of the people are struggling for food and clothing, Majoro said.

The World Conference on China Studies, with its aim to form a better mutual understanding between China and the world, is important to people in China and the world, Majoro said. The forum, the predecessor of the World Conference on China Studies, was founded in 2004. It is held every two years.
