(Yicai) July 22 -- Chinese gene-sequencing giant BGI Genomics and its local partner Technopark Biogen opened a new laboratory in Astana, Kazakhstan, to help diagnose and treat diseases early.
The Astana Genetic Center, located inside Kazakhstan’s National Center of Biotechnology, is equipped with advanced hardware for genome sequencing and analyzing genetic data, and its goal is to become a world-class advanced testing lab, the Shenzhen-based company announced recently.
The lab will enrich reproductive health services in the area and work on detecting cancers early as it offers noninvasive prenatal testing, and screens for diseases in newborns and embryos created by in vitro fertilization, as well as colorectal cancer.
In addition, the center will focus on academic exchanges to boost research and applications of genetic testing technologies, as well as foster local talent to enhance precision medicine testing in Central Asia.
Kunsulu Zakariya, advisor to the president of Kazakhstan on science and innovation, Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova, and BGI Genomics Chief Executive Yin Ye attended the opening ceremony.
