(Yicai Global) July 9 -- In response to the shipwreck tragedy in Phuket Island, Thailand on July 5, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China will soon carry out an urgent investigation of the summer travel market, require all scenic areas to assist in-depth investigations and controls over hidden safety hazards to avert travel-related emergencies.

All online tourism companies and platforms and travel agencies must urgently check for and remove an array of substandard self-service tour products, as state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Two tour boats hit by a sudden heavy storm in waters off the coast of Phuket Island, Thailand capsized and sank. The Chinese Embassy in Thailand confirmed 41 Chinese citizens died in the ship disaster. The accident has caused 42 deaths, with 15 still missing.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism will require tourists to provide their personal information when buying overseas travel products, and online tourism firms and platforms and product suppliers must warn of risks when promoting and selling outbound self-service tour projects.

Online travel enterprises and platforms will get guidelines on establishing and consummating their emergency mechanisms for outbound self-service tours, with a clear list of their responsibilities enumerated, improved emergency planning, detailed security measures, smooth information channels, and prompt risk warnings.

Tourists will also receive guidance on how to plan their itineraries in a rational manner and choose operators with proper qualifications, and refrain from blindly seeking thrills and taking risks.
