(Yicai Global) Jan.18 -- China became the country with largest iOS App Store revenue during fourth quarter 2016, a report from data analysis platform 'App Annie' says. China's iOS revenue growth rate has accelerated substantially since 2015.
The revenue of iOS App Store publishers in China topped the chart at over USD2 billion in the fourth quarter last year, the report says. Although China's overall revenue is still behind the Japanese and American markets, increases seen at the end of last year are narrowing the gap.
Chinese downloads contribute nearly 80 percent of global iOS app growth. iPhone users in the country, use an average of nearly 30 apps a month -- more than anywhere else.
The bulk of the revenue generated by the App Store in China comes from games, especially in the sub-categories of role-playing games. One very successful example is "Fantasy Westward Journey." Since its launch in 2015, the game has generated more than USD800 million of income in China for NetEase.
Other categories of applications have also seen strong growth. Aside from games, social apps posted the most revenue growth. The majority of their revenue came from Tencent's messaging application QQ.
