China Unicom Unveils Big Data Platform to Standardize Services China Unicom Unveils Big Data Platform to Standardize Services

(Yicai Global) Sept. 25 -- China United Network Communications Group Co. [SHA:600050], one of China's three major telecommunication carriers and better known as China Unicom, has established a Big Data service subsidiary and released white papers to standardize services and product series.

The new firm will serve as a platform for Big Data joint ventures and collaborations, Jiang Zhengxin the parent firm's deputy general manager said, adding that it will engage in in-depth cooperation with strategic investors in resource, business and market development operations after the mixed-ownership reform of the parent company, Chinese telecommunication portal CCTime reported today.

The state-owned carrier published a mixed-ownership reform plan in mid-August, declaring that its list of new strategic investors would include tech giants Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA], Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HKG:0700] and Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU].

China Unicom has acquired experience in data concentration, platform construction, open sourcing and service operations over the past five years, and this provides the technical groundwork for the development of the new Big Data platform. In future, the subsidiary will commit itself to creating a Big Data ecosystem covering the entire industry chain with a market-based operating model, Jiang added.

The carrier has also recently entered a strategic partnership with China UnionPay, a bankcard operator affiliated with the People's Bank of China, to kick off comprehensive cooperation in data resources, technology capacity building and product research and development, the report said.
