(Yicai Global) Jan. 8 -- Chinese solar wafer developer Trina Solar has penned a deal to supply major US new-energy developer NextEra Energy with 4-gigawatt large solar modules.
The contract signed between two subsidiaries is for large-size photovoltaic modules using 210-nanometer silicon wafers for delivery between next year and 2023, Trina Solar said late yesterday. No financial details were revealed, but the Changzhou-based company did say both parties had agreed a pricing mechanism.
Prices of solar cell modules and raw material silicon wafers swing greatly because of demand, so when agreeing long-term supply contracts, Chinese manufacturers usually specify that the parties will decide the unit price on a monthly basis.
Shares of Trina Solar [SHA: 688599] jumped about 6 percent this morning, only to end the day 0.4 percent lower at CNY23.50 (USD3.64) each.
The company has become one of China’s major developers of large-scale silicon wafer solar cells. Amid rapid growth in investment in solar power plant construction in the country, Trina Solar has been expanding its production capacity.
Last August and December, the firm said it would invest a total of CNY6.8 billion (USD1.05 billion) to build an 18.5 GW large solar module plant in Yancheng through renovation and new construction, while building an 8 GW plant in nearby Suqian for CNY4.35 billion.
Trina Solar will use 70 percent of the new capacity to produce big high-efficiency cells with 210 nm silicon wafers, according the plan announced in August.
