China Three Gorges Renewables to Build USD11 Billion New Energy Power Supply Base in Inner Mongolia China Three Gorges Renewables to Build USD11 Billion New Energy Power Supply Base in Inner Mongolia

(Yicai) June 28 -- A green energy generation subsidiary of China Three Gorges said it will invest CNY79.8 billion (USD11 billion) to build a large new energy power supply base in a desert in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Located in the Kubuqi desert, the base will have an 8,000 megawatts solar plant, a 4,000 MW wind plant, and a 200 MW optothermal plant, as well as a supporting 4,000 MW coal plant and 5,000 MW-hours of new energy storage facilities, China Three Gorges Renewables said late yesterday.

A unit of China Three Gorges Renewables will hold a 56 percent stake in a joint venture project company set up for the base, while an energy investment firm backed by the local government will own the rest, the Beijing-based firm noted. The JV will directly invest CNY16 billion in the power station and raise the remainder from banks and finance leases, it added.

The Kubuqi base sits in the Dalad banner in Ordos, about 650 kilometers from Beijing. The electricity it generates will supply the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region via ultra-high voltage direct current transmission lines, which other firms will invest in and build, the company said.

The photovoltaic and optothermal power plants have been registered at government agencies, while the wind and coal power plants have gained government approvals, the firm noted.

The coal power plant will start building in September and become operational in 2027, with the start of the remaining construction work dependent on the progress of the coal plant and the transmission lines, it added.

Shares of China Three Gorges Renewables [SHA: 600905] jumped 1.9 percent to end at CNY4.36 (60 US cents) apiece today. The broader Shanghai market rose 0.7 percent.
