(Yicai Global) July 18 -- China Telecom Corp., one of the country's biggest mobile carriers, said it plans to introduce full traffic billing by converting voice calls and text messages to traffic for unified billing and will phase out long-distance and roaming fees.
Traffic included in the full-traffic plan will be billed at one rate nationwide, an industry first. Voice calls, which can be converted to traffic, are also billed on a nationwide basis. Both calls and texts can be converted into data traffic for billing purposes based on certain standards.
With the development of the mobile Internet, mobile phone users have generated more and more data traffic, while calls have become almost redundant. China Telecom had already rolled out data-only plans that were popular with subscribers who mainly use data, but failed to satisfy people who still have want to make voice calls.
