(Yicai Global) Sept. 2 -- China Telecommunications, one of China's biggest mobile carriers, has become a member of a global fifth-generation wireless extended reality alliance to advance augmented reality and virtual reality content.
China Telecom has joined the Global XR Content Telco Alliance which includes South Korean cellular carrier LG Uplus, Japan's KDDI, Bell Canada, US chipmaker Qualcomm, as well as Canadian VR firm Felix & Paul Studios and France's Atlas V, the Beijing-based company said in a statement yesterday.
Before this, China Telecom has already joined hands with LG Uplus and Qualcomm to develop VR content.
XR will overtake the role of traditional media by offering unique immersive experiences and become a key part of the 5G ecosystem, said the Chinese firm.
5G is becoming as major as steam engines and electricity were for the society's social and economic development in the past, Chen Li, deputy general manager of China Telecom's unit, said during the latest Augmented World Expo. "We are very pleased to jointly drive the deployment of 5G and XR in industrial, medical, education and consumer fields in 2020.”
