(Yicai Global) Jan. 15 -- China Telecom, one of the country's three major mobile carriers, has signed up more than eight million users for its fifth-generation wireless network service since starting it in November, according to the company's general manager.

The Beijing-based firm will continue to rapidly expand its 5G user base this year, Sina's tech news arm reported, citing Wang Guoquan, who spoke at the 2020 Promotional Meeting for China Telecom Terminal Ecological Cooperation today. China Telecom aims to provide 5G packages and end products that meet the needs of users, and will focus on their in the informationization of individuals, households and industry, Wang added.

China Mobile, the nation's biggest mobile communications operator, had 3.02 million 5G users as of Jan. 7, it said last week. Rival China Unicom has not released any information about its 5G user numbers so far.

China is likely to become the world's biggest 5G market. Handset makers sold 13.77 million 5G smartphones last year, of which 5.14 million were sold in December alone, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in its latest data release last week.

China Telecom's mobile users have reached 340 million, with 180 million broadband users, Wang said.
