(Yicai Global) May 31 -- Chinese Taihai Manoir Nuclear Equipment will work with a research institute owned by China General Nuclear Power, the country's major nuclear power developer, to make radiation-proof transport options for the latter.
Taihai agreed with China Nuclear Power Technology Research Institute to test and manufacture spent fuel containers, aiming to engineer a prototype in two years, the Shandong-based metal processing firm said in a statement.
Spent fuel is an already used fuel rod found at the core of a nuclear reactor. In the process of replacing the rod, transport is critical because the equipment holds a very high level of radioactivity.
Another Chinese nuclear giant, China National Nuclear, has produced a prototype of a large spent fuel transport container, which was accepted by a panel of experts at the end of last year and thus has the capacity for mass production.
