(Yicai Global) Aug. 11 -- China's cyberspace regulator, through its Beijing and Guangdong branches is investigating the country's top social media sites and applications for failing to screen content that falls foul of current online regulation.

"Users are spreading violence, terror, false rumors, pornography and other hazards to national security, public safety, social order," the State Internet Information Office said in a statement on its website.

The People's Republic of China Network Security Law was promulgated by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on November 7, 2016 and came into force from June 1 this year. The aim of the law is to safeguard network security, network space sovereignty and national security, and protect the legitimate interests of citizens.
