China Signs Up For UN-Backed Freight Customs System China Signs Up For UN-Backed Freight Customs System

(Yicai Global) May 21 -- China has become the 61st country to start using the United Nations' Transport International Router, a global customs transit system that improves the safety of international road transport through simplifying procedures and making clearance more efficient.

The country has opened six pilot gateways for the system around the country and held an event in Dalian, capital of northeastern Liaoning province to mark the start of operations, Economic Daily reported. In addition to Dalian, the gateways are located in Xinjiang Autonomous Region (2), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (2) and northern Heilongjiang province (1).

The six pilot gateways will play a crucial role in the Belt and Road Initiative, said Zhang Jianping, director of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, adding that they will help to meet the developmental demand of the North Eurasia Land Bridge Economic Corridor, the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor, and the China-Central Asia-West Asia Economic Corridor.

China and Russia also jointly kicked off pilot operations on a new 5,000-kilometer road transport system linking Dalian and Novosibirsk via 20 cities across both countries. The route will be the longest between both nations and also cover the largest number of most cities.
