(Yicai Global) Jan. 8 -- Asia is home to half of the 100 largest container ports in the world, and China alone has seven ports in the top-10 list and 20 ports in the top-100 list, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported, citing data published by Korea Shipping Gazette published on Jan. 3.
Seven of the 10 largest container ports by throughput are located in China, and they are in Shanghai (1), Hong Kong (2), Shenzhen (3), Ningbo (4), Guangzhou (7), Qingdao (8) and Tianjin (10). China has a total of 20 ports in the top-20 list.
Singapore port ranked fifth, with Busan, South Korea, and Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, coming in at sixth and ninth places. Japan has the second largest number of ports, with five in the top-100 list, followed by South Korea, the data show.
Global container throughput was 737.76 million standard containers last year, of which 54 percent were contributed by Asian ports. In particular, 20 Chinese ports accounted for 29.9 percent of the global total.
