China’s Ping An Denies Refusing to Insure Tesla Cars China’s Ping An Denies Refusing to Insure Tesla Cars

(Yicai Global) April 21 -- There is no such thing that the motor insurance unit of Ping An Insurance is no longer issuing policies to owners of Tesla electric cars, Shanghai Securities News reported today, citing the leading Chinese insurer’s response to same-day media reports.

Ping An Property and Casualty Insurance is refusing to insure new Tesla vehicles in Beijing, Shanghai as well as Zhejiang, Henan and Shaanxi provinces, Sina Finance reported earlier today, citing insurance sales channels and car owners.

It is also beginning to tighten renewals of existing policies, it added.

California-based Tesla has come under fire recently from Chinese consumers for alleged quality issues and just this week was upstaged at the Shanghai Auto Show by disgruntled car owners who made their grievances public.

Ping An’s motor insurance unit dismissed all applications from new Tesla owners and previous owners who did not insure with Shenzhen-based Ping An last year, the Sina report said. Some Tesla owners are also claiming that they cannot renew their insurance policy with Ping An, it added.
