(Yicai Global) Sept. 23 -- The Chinese government is to allow beef to be imported from the US for the first time since 2003, which had been banned since the first case of mad cow disease was reported in the US.

American beef that meets the requirements of China's traceability system, as well as inspection and quarantine rules, can now be sold in the country, China's Ministry of Agriculture and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a joint announcement yesterday,

Subject to risk assessment results, the ban on US beef on the bone and beef off the bone that is under 30-months old, which was jointly imposed by the ministry of agriculture and the state's administration of entry-exit inspection and quarantine in 2001, will be conditionally lifted, effective as of the date of the issuance of the announcement.
