China's Health Authority Calls for Faster Approvals of New Drugs, More Traditional Medicine

(Yicai Global) Oct. 12 -- Guidelines released today by China's health authority call for speeding up the approval process of urgently needed new drugs and the greater use of traditional Chinese medicine in clinical practice.

Efforts should be made to strengthen research and development into drugs and medical devices, to put in place a special review and approval system for innovative drugs and medical devices, and to speed up the review and approval of new drugs that are urgently needed in clinical practice, according to the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

The document calls for improving the evaluation system of the technological achievements of traditional Chinese medicine and their conversion into products, improving the framework for using traditional medicine as a preventive treatment for diseases and enhancing the standardized level of traditional medicine used to rehabilitate patients.

It also requests all levels of government to ramp up fiscal investment in the health care and pharmaceutical sectors.
