(Yicai Global) June 2 -- Chinese companies are seeking to become the next leaders in 5G wireless communication networks.
China will assign new frequency bands of 200M for 5G testing it was announced at the first Global 5G Event held in Beijing yesterday.
Such efforts will send a positive signal to global 5G research and development organizations, said Mr. Xiang Jiying, CTO of the wireless division at major Chinese telecoms equipment maker ZTE Corp. [HKG:0763].
China used to import all of its mobile network equipment, but during the 2G era it began to manufacture some pieces of equipment. In the 3G era, China lagged behind in terms of the formulation of communication standards. China developed independent TD-SCDMA network standards, which have not been successful. China Mobile announced earlier this year that the project will be closed down.
Both tech giant Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE announced in March that they will be involved in 5G trial commercial operations. China Mobile Ltd. [HKG:0941], China's largest telecoms operator, has said it expects to achieve full commercialization of 5G technology by 2020.
