(Yicai Global) Sept. 10 -- Shanghai's Dalian Road Tunnel will become China's first underwater tunnel with fifth-generation wireless network coverage.
China Unicom will install 5G for the Dalian Road Tunnel, which crosses the Huangpu River, by the end of next month, the Shanghai Observer reported. The fast network in the 2.5-kilometer tunnel that connects Puxi with Pudong will be offered to the public later.
China Unicom plans to use augmented reality technologies, video streaming, and positioning to improve the maintenance of the tunnel, said Liao Chunyun from the telecom operator's key account center in Shanghai. With video streaming, workers can communicate with experts in real-time to fix defective equipment on the spot instead of taking photos and bringing them to experts above the ground.
