China Finishes Its First Mountain Tunnel for Utilities Ahead of Beijing Winter Olympics China Finishes Its First Mountain Tunnel for Utilities Ahead of Beijing Winter Olympics

China has opened the country's first mountain underpass to deliver utilities. The almost 8 kilometers long tunnel in Yanqing, one of the game sites, will bring water, electricity, and network connection for athletes, visitors and staff members of the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics to be held in 2022.

The tunnel will start delivering water and electricity in September to prepare for test matches scheduled for January 2010.

The project was started in September 2017 in the city of Yanqing, which is about 75 kilometers from Beijing. The city will host competitions involving alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.

The mouth of the tunnel is 550 meters above sea level, and the exit doubles the elevation at 1,100 meters.

A board outside the tunnel counted the number of days to finish the project.
