(Yicai Global) March 21 -- Chinese hospitals have completed the global first remote brain surgery via the fifth-generation of wireless network, despite a distance of thousands of kilometers.
Telecom operator China Mobile and handset maker Huawei Technologies partnered to power the operation via a superfast live-streaming connection, which allowed Chief Physician Ling Zhipei to consult a doctor to set a deep brain stimulation implant for a patient with Parkinson's disease in Beijing's PLA General Hospital, state-backed Economic Information Daily reported, citing China Mobile.
"The surgery was almost real-time and I even could not notice that my patient was 3,000 kilometers away from me," Ling said. The doctor heads PLA's two neurosurgery departments in Beijing and Hainan, but he happened to be in the southern province when the acute case emerged.
The global first 5G surgery happened last week in China, as two public hospitals treated a patient with a liver tumor, Yicai Global reported on March 14.
5G makes remote medical operations safe as it allows experts to know about patients' conditions anytime and anywhere, Beijing-based China Mobile told the Economic Information Daily.
