China E-Commerce Lifts Express Parcels 80% to 4 Billion in January, Post Bureau Says China E-Commerce Lifts Express Parcels 80% to 4 Billion in January, Post Bureau Says

(Yicai Global) Feb. 13 -- China's courier companies delivered 4 billion parcels last month -- up 80 percent from a low base during last year's Spring Festival -- and pocketed CNY50 billion in revenue for a rise of 61 percent annually, per latest data the state post bureau issued today.

Delivery volume is usually low during the Chinese New Year holiday as most couriers return home. The festival fell in January last year but comes on Feb. 16 this year.

China's express delivery sector completed 910 million intra-city deliveries last month, a rise of 63 percent from a year ago, 3 billion inter-city deliveries, up 86 percent annually, and 90 million deliveries to and from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and foreign countries, an 85-percent increase from the year before, SPB data show.

Eastern, central and western regions made up 81 percent, 12 percent and 8 percent of total deliveries in China, respectively, last month, and 80 percent, 11 percent and 9 percent of total revenue, indicating that economically-developed eastern regions receive the lion's share of the country's express deliveries.

The cities of Guangzhou, Shanghai, Jinhua in Zhejiang province where the Yiwu market for small commodities is located, Shenzhen, Hangzhou where Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is based, Beijing, Suzhou and Dongguan saw more than 100 million deliveries last month, with the top six cities each recording over 200 million.

China's courier companies have grown rapidly in step with China's booming e-commerce sector.
