China Contributed 30% to Global Economic Growth This Year, UN Says China Contributed 30% to Global Economic Growth This Year, UN Says

(Yicai Global) Dec. 12 -- China chipped in a third toward global economic growth this year, which grew 3 percent to hit a six-year high, state-owned news agency Xinhua quoted the United Nations as saying in an annual report.

As crisis-related fragilities and the adverse effects of other recent shocks gradually subside, the world economy has strengthened overall, the report said, and almost two thirds of the countries registered faster economic growth this year than last.

The global economic recovery is an encouraging sign, but nations worldwide still need to step up efforts and avoid damaging the environment amid economic development, Liu Zhenmin, the UN deputy secretary-general for economic and social affairs, said yesterday at the release of a report, which is named World Economic Situation and Prospects 2018.

East and South Asia remained the world's most dynamic region, making up nearly half of global growth, the UN report said. Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria and Russia emerged from recession to contribute significantly to worldwide growth this year.

Economic improvements varied substantially from region to region. The UN forecasts only negligible per-capita growth in Africa, Western Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean for the period from 2017 through 2019, and only expects a small number of unfledged countries to meet sustainable development targets.

The worldwide economic recovery paves the way for policies to address climate change and inequality, and remove institutional barriers to development, the report said. Global prospects have improved over the short term, but the world is still facing risks arising from changes in trade policies, a deteriorating financial climate and escalated geopolitical tensions.

The report projects global economic growth to remain around 3 percent for the next two years.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and five regional economic and social affairs committees under the UN publish the World Economic Situation and Prospects report once a year.
