(Yicai Global) Jan. 12 -- China continued to be the world's leading investor in clean energy projects abroad last year, with total investment in large projects rising 33 percent annually to a record USD44 billion from USD32 billion, a new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis states.

Hydropower plants made up the majority of China's major green energy contracts overseas, with major projects in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Output from Chinese solar firms account for about 60 percent of photovoltaic cell production globally, and the country's modules have taken a leading position in the rapidly growing Indian market, the report said.

Major Chinese wind energy companies continued to expand overseas in 2017, with a consortium led by China Resources Co. taking a 30 percent stake in an offshore wind farm in the UK, and the China Three Gorges Group making major investments in Portugal's largest wind plant project.
