(Yicai Global) Nov. 11 -- Chinese power battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology has signed a battery supply and technology deal with Daihatsu to promote e-mobility in Japan.
CATL will supply batteries for Daihatsu's electric vehicles, the Ningde-based company said through WeChat today. The pair also intend to promote the use of advanced battery technologies, such as cell-to-pack and battery management systems.
With CATL's advanced batteries, Daihatsu will ramp up production and performance of high-quality and affordable EVs in Japan and other emerging markets, the Osaka-based automaker said in a press release. The tie-up will speed Daihatsu's electrification shift and help it meet its long-term zero-carbon goals, it added.
The partnership is an important step for CATL's global layout and will help it explore various types of cooperation in regional markets such as Japan and Southeast Asia to further promote the global drive for e-mobility transition and carbon neutrality, it said.
Founded in 1907, Daihatsu is one of Japan’s oldest auto manufacturers. It mainly produces compact passenger cars, which are sold in more than 160 countries.
CATL first partnered with Japanese automakers in 2019, when it inked a lithium-ion battery supply deal with Honda Motor and Toyota Motor. In July last year, CATL elevated its association with Honda to a strategic tie-up. It did so with Toyota last month.
