(Yicai Global) Jan. 30 -- China’s box office grossed CNY6.7 billion (USD992.4 million) during the Chinese New Year holiday, according to online ticketing platform Cbdio.
More than 120 million people had gone to the cinema over the seven-day break as of 9 p.m. on Jan. 27, real-time data from Cbdio showed. On the first day of the holiday, 11,544 movie theaters were open nationwide, about 98 percent of the same period last year.
Full River Red, a historical film directed by Zhang Yimou, earned CNY2.6 billion, topping the box office. Science fiction flick The Wandering Earth II, starring Wu Jing and Andy Lau Tak Wah, was second with CNY1.2 billion. The two movies accounted for about 60 percent of takings over the Spring Festival holiday.
Imax cinema revenues jumped 54 percent to a record CNY231 million (USD34.2 million), according to data from IMAX. The Wandering Earth II sold the most Imax tickets at CNY178 million.
The Wandering Earth I, released during the Spring Festival of 2019, was China’s fifth highest-grossing movie ever, raking in CNY4.7 billion.
