China Accepts First Seaborne Shipment of US Beef in 14 Years China Accepts First Seaborne Shipment of US Beef in 14 Years

(Yicai Global) Sept. 6 -- The first batch of fresh frozen US beef sent to China by sea since it started importing American beef again arrived in Shanghai recently.

The shipment entered China via the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port on Sept. 1, marking the start of large-scale exports of US beef to China, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, citing an announcement published yesterday by the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

The 15.1 tons of beef are worth more than USD300,000. China has streamlined its inspection process and established a paperless quarantine approval process, the bureau said.

Seaborne shipments of beef will likely bring down high prices and help satisfy demand in China, the bureau said. US beef may find it difficult to compete in scale with imported beef from other countries.

China reopened its market to US beef in June this year after a 14-year absence. Problems including short supply and high prices have emerged in the Chinese market as beef was primarily transported by air at a higher cost.
