(Yicai Global) Sept. 19 -- Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world's largest battery maker, has agreed to put its products in Daimler trucks and buses as the Chinese firm expands supplies to Europe, a key market for new-energy vehicles.
CATL will provide Daimler Trucks & Buses with batteries for vehicles it plans to launch in 2021, including the Mercedes-Benz eActros, the Freightliner eCascadia and the Freightliner eM2, the Fujian province-based company said in a statement yesterday. It did not disclose the volume or the price.
CATL's Europe President Matthias Zentgraft said at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, which ends on Sept. 22, that the company was anticipating supply deals with more European manufacturers this year.
"Providing clean power for commercial vehicles with an efficient and reliable lithium battery solution is an important part of the global electrification process," CATL President Zhou Jia added.
Last year, CATL said it planned to set up a plant in Erfurt, Germany, and start battery production in 2021 with the aim of lifting capacity to 14 gigawatt-hours in 2022. This year CATL said it hopes to expand the factory into the world's biggest such plant to meet demand from big-name European clients such as Daimler, BMW, Volkswagen, Jaguar Land Rover, and PSA Group.
