Canada to Double Visa Centers in China Next Year as Tourism Grows 20 Percent

(Yicai Global) Oct. 26 -- Canada is planning to open seven new visa application centers in China next year, doubling the existing number, to attract more Chinese tourists.

"It is expected that 550,000 Chinese tourists will visit Canada next year and we estimate that Chinese visitors will grow 15-20 percent in the next three to four years", said Mr. David Goldstein, CEO at the Canadian tourism commission.

The commission will also introduce different marketing strategies specifically targeted at different types of tourists, be they students, families or retired in a bid to attract the maximum number of Chinese visitors.

As of June, almost 340,000 Chinese tourists visited Canada this year, up 24 percent from last year and the figure is expected to rise once the whole year is taken into account, according to Statistics Canada,

"Every Chinese tourist spends around CAD2,500 (USD1,872) in Canada on average. Based on the current exchange rate of the Canadian dollar against the US, tourists to Canada enjoy a discount of around 30 percent, which also adds to the appeal of Canada to Chinese tourists," added Mr. Goldstein.
