BYD’s Shares Rise After Chinese Carmaker Unveils Five-Minute EV Charging System BYD’s Shares Rise After Chinese Carmaker Unveils Five-Minute EV Charging System

(Yicai) March 18 -- BYD’s shares climbed after the Chinese carmaker launched new platform that enables electric vehicles to charge nearly as quickly as refueling a gas tank.

In Shenzhen, BYD’s shares [SHE: 002594] added 1.1 percent to close at CNY384.57 (USD53.21) apiece, after gaining by as much as 2.6 percent earlier today. Its Hong Kong-listed stock [HKG: 1211] was trading 4.3 percent higher at HKD402.20 (USD51.77) as of 3.41 p.m. local time.

At peak voltage and current, the flash-charging battery in BYD's Super e-Platform can deliver up to one megawatt of power, enabling vehicles to charge for a 400-kilometer range in just five minutes, faster than existing charging technologies, it was revealed at yesterday's launch event.

Super e-Platform is the world's first mass-produced megawatt-level EV charging solution, as well as the automotive industry's first battery with megawatt-charging power, Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, said at the event.

BYD plans to construct more than 4,000 fast-charging stations across China and intends to share this technology with the industry with the aim of attracting more private capital to jointly build a denser network of fast-charging stations.

The Shenzhen-based company also revealed yesterday that it has developed a 'smart boost' technology that automatically increases the output voltage of existing public fast-charging stations when charging vehicles equipped with Super e-Platform.

Super e-Platform not only represents a breakthrough in charging technology but also comprehensively upgrades and deeply integrates core EV components such as motors, batteries, and battery management systems.
