(Yicai Global) March 10 -- Robert Bosch is teaming up with China's Tsinghua University to build a research center for artificial intelligence as the German engineering giant looks to modernize its future product portfolio.

The two firms will spend CNY50 million (USD7.2 million) to build the Tsinghua-Bosch Joint Research Center for Machine Learning and pair up for five years to conduct research together, The Paper cited the companies as saying yesterday. The hub will focus on machine learning and its development and applications, including fundamental theories, probabilistic programming and the use of AI in intelligent manufacturing, according to the report.

Bosch will also set up a donation scheme to provide CNY5 million in funds for AI professors at Tsinghua's Department of Computer Science and Technology, helping to bolster its efforts to give all of its products AI functionality by 2025.

Bosch already has seven AI research centers in Germany, the US, India, Israel and China, which have fostered more than 160 projects covering mobility, manufacturing, agriculture and smart homes. The firm has around 1,000 AI experts worldwide.

Tsinghua is a leading university in AI research both at home and abroad, and has formed its own standards in machine learning, data retrieval and natural language processing. The institution has published more high-level papers than all but one worldwide over the past decade, with several winning awards from leading international conferences and journals, according to computer science-focused academic review site CSRankings.
