Temple of Heaven (VCG)

On Oct. 19, 2016, most areas of Beijing were trapped in moderately heavy in the north to seriously heavy smog in the south. Residents, visitors on streets all wore masks.

During October 13-16, 2016, Beijing was struck by the second wave of severe pollution since the beginning of autumn this year. Relevant authorities launched the blue pre-warning of heavy air pollution and it was changed to the more severe yellow, which was lifted at 5.00 p.m. on Oct. 16.

The photo shows the CBD wreathed in smog with visibility getting increasingly poor. Landmark buildings including the China Summit Wing and the CCTV Tower were hidden in the smog and traffic slowed to a crawl.

Beijing West Train Station (VCG)

At 4.00 p.m. on Oct. 18, 2016, Beijing's meteorological center released a yellow air pollution warning once again. According to forecasts, most areas in Beijing will be hit  by moderately heavy smog from dusk of Oct. 18 till Oct. 19, with seriously heavy smog in the south. The photo shows Beijing West Train Station, its sign rendered illegible in either Chinese or English by dense smog.

Taken around 48 hours since the last yellow pre-warning for serious air pollution had been lifted, the photo shows Changan Avenue disappear into the smog on the horizon.

Beijing's Central Business District (VCG)

By 4.00 p.m. on October 18, the PM2.5 index of six districts had exceeded 150 micrograms per square meter, heavy pollution classed as level-five. The photo shows the CBD with buildings only distinct in the foreground.

With little wind, there was no diffusion of the smog which got progressively worse, spreading across the city. Beijing's CBD was enveloped in a gray shroud.

City Road (VCG)

Yesterday featured the heaviest pollution since the smog appeared. Moderately heavy smog could be found with seriously heavy one in the south. The whole city was smothered by the morning, with visibility in some areas down to less than a kilometer.
