Beijing to Use BeiDou System in Car-Hailing, Set Up Regulatory Platform Beijing to Use BeiDou System in Car-Hailing, Set Up Regulatory Platform

(Yicai Global) Aug. 27 -- Beijing plans to enhance supervision of car-hailing services by equipping the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System in such vehicles now that half of the city's taxis and all its buses use it.

More than 90,000 BDS terminals have been installed in taxis, buses and logistics vehicles, said Kong Lei, deputy director of Beijing's economy and informationization commission, Beijing Evening News reported today.

The capital's move to monitor cars hailed online follows closely on the rape and murder of a woman passenger of Didi Chuxing's car-pooling service on Aug. 25 and burgeoning reports of similar and other crimes committed by such drivers.

BDS is also committed to building a regulatory platform for car-hailing. It has reportedly developed provincial and municipal platforms for interactive oversight information based on internet, big data, and other technologies. These platforms provide location-tracking, tracking queries, alarms and other services. The new system can also interact with the car-hailing platform that China's transport ministry has established to monitor vehicle operation throughout the city.

BDS, which China developed independently, is the world's third mature satellite navigation system after the US Global Positioning System and the Global Navigation Satellite System of Russia.

The ranks of BDS users topped 22 million last year, with a yearly rise of 37.5 percent, statistics show. Related Internet of Vehicles hardware claimed a market share of USD3.87 billion, and a market penetration rate that has reached 7.1 percent.
