(Yicai Global) Aug. 2 -- Beijing will put more pure electric buses into service and raise their ranks from the current 1,000 to 10,000 by 2020, Chinese state-owned transport group Beijing Public Transport Holding (Group) Co. said.

Pure electric buses currently make up 10 percent of Beijing's total fleet, and that percentage is set to increase to 60 percent by 2020, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Beijing's Yanqing district has recently inaugurated two bus routes with 50 pure electric vehicles, Xinhua said. Electric vehicles plying the two routes can complete charging in just 20 minutes and have 80 miles of battery range. These two routes can transport some 3.45 million passengers every year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 16 million tons, estimates show.

Electric buses earmarked for the routes include 30-seat single-decker buses and 70-seat double-decker ones. The new routes will serve the main venues of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and the Beijing International Horticultural Exposition 2019.
