(Yicai Global) Sept. 6 -- Construction of Beijing's new airport is progressing well, and once complete, it will help form a dual-hub with Beijing Capital International Airport, said Liu Xuesong, general manager of operator Capital Airports Holding Co.
Beijing Capital plans to divest non-international hub functions and adjust corresponding flights in order to improve services, he added.
Building work on the new airport's roof and passenger corridors is already complete, while airfield construction is still underway. The new airport will become a leading international aviation hub and an integrated transit center in the northern Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It will also aid the development of the Xiongan New Area, the Beijing News reported.
The two hubs will help satisfy market demand in Beijing, Liu said, adding that they will pursue balanced development and operate independently with moderate competition.
Airlines will be encouraged to shift flights from Beijing Capital to the new airport so that it can meet passenger traffic and throughput requirements quickly in its early stage of operation.
