Beijing Is Likely to Keep Controlling Home Prices, Offer More Affordable Housing This Year Beijing Is Likely to Keep Controlling Home Prices, Offer More Affordable Housing This Year

(Yicai Global) Jan. 4 -- Beijing will continue to increase new house supply, control sale prices and ramp up the proportion of small- and medium-sized properties to meet the needs of low-income earners this year, an executive at online real estate agency 5i5j predicts.

Sales in the Chinese capital dived 48.4 percent last year after the government tightened market regulation, state-run China News Service reported, citing data from 5i5j. Excluding government-provided affordable housing, homeowners in Beijing put 30,115 properties up for sale online.

China began tightening its grip on the real estate market in March, enforcing its "a house is a home, not an investment" mantra and restricting individual housing loans. Before the government intervened, the nation had seen property prices soar nationwide. In Beijing, prices rose for over two straight years from early 2015, not dipping until June last year.
