Beijing Commission Investigates Several Five-Star Hotels for Sanitation Problems Beijing Commission Investigates Several Five-Star Hotels for Sanitation Problems

(Yicai Global) Sept. 6 -- The Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning will probe several five-star hotels, including Marriott International Inc.'s [NASDAQ:MAR] Beijing W Hotel and InterContinental Hotels Group's [LON:IHG] Sanlitun district hotel on allegations of issues related to sanitation.

These hotels did not change bedding or disinfect toiletries for new guests, the claims say. The companies concerned said that self-inspections are underway.

Independent agency Lanmei Test stayed in five 5-star hotels and found that all of them failed to change bedding after check-out, it said in a report released on Sept. 4. None of them cleaned bathtubs and some did not disinfect the toilet seats and mouth-rinsing mugs.

The five hotels will release results of their self-inspections to the public, online financial news outlet NetEase Money reported on Sept. 5.

Lanmei's investigation cannot truly reflect the hotel's operations, said a spokesperson for InterContinental Hotels.

Most of the hotels are under good management, but some failed to manage well, said Beijing health authorities.

Some 46 of 691 express hotels inspected in Beijing this summer were found to have sanitation problems and 35 were fined, a previous report by the above-mentioned municipal authority found.
