(Yicai Global) Aug. 30 -- Beijing Shuidi Mutual Insurance Technology Co., a medical crowd-funding startup, has raised USD24.3 million (CNY160 million) through A-round financing led by Shenzhen Tencent Computer System Co., a subsidiary of tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HKG:0700].

The other major investors are BlueRun Ventures, Beijing Sankuai Online Technology Co.'s Meituan-Dianping, China's biggest group deal platform and leading food delivery firm, and several investment institutions as secondary investors, online news outlet Dark Horse reported.

Wang Huiwen, president of catering businesses at Meituan, will serve as a supervisor at Shuidi Mutual Insurance Technology following the investment deal.

The medical startup, set up by Shen Peng, co-founder of Meituan's takeout service platform Meituan Waimai, provides mobile medical services and financing solutions. It currently offers three types of services, a fund-raising platform, a mutual assistance community and an online insurance platform.

The crowd-funding platform has so far offered free fund-raising for more than 60,000 patients with financial difficulties, raising a total of over USD150 million. The mutual assistance community has about four million members, who equally share the USD1.82 million mutual assistance fund.

Proceeds from the latest funding round will be used to recruit qualified artificial intelligence professionals and specialists in traditional health insurance, Shen noted, adding that his company will invest more resources to create a development model that combines technology with health insurance services.
