(Yicai Global) March 1 -- Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] announced the establishment of its Intelligent Driving Group (IDG), which will integrate its existing business and resources, with Lu Qi, Baidu's president and chief operating officer, to act as its general manager.
The newly-established IDG will reportedly be comprise an Automated Driving division (L4), Intelligent Vehicle section (L3) and Internet of Vehicles department with the aim of further enhancing efficiency and coordinated development, and better promoting the upgrade of the traditional automotive industry in the era of artificial intelligence. Senior Vice President Wang Jin will no longer serve as general manager of the Automated Driving Division (L4) for personal and family reasons.
Baidu leads the industry by leaps and bounds in terms of investment in intelligent driving and research and driving results. As early as the end of 2015, Baidu unmanned vehicles achieved fully-automated driving on mixed road conditions, including city roads, ring roads and highways. Baidu also received an automatic driving road test license for unmanned vehicles in California in September, while in last week's earnings analysis meeting, Baidu said it will continue to increase future investment in intelligent driving.
Baidu also stated that, "Auto driving, smart travel, high-precision maps, and car networking are important components of Baidu's strategic business and core competency. In the new era of artificial intelligence, intelligent driving has seminal strategic significance for AI technology marketization and industrialization, and is one important way for Baidu to change the world through technology."
