(Yicai Global) July 19 -- Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] will develop and expand its self-driving technology with assistance from Microsoft Corp. [NASDAQ:MSFT], the two tech giants said today.

A partner of Baidu's Project Apollo, Microsoft will provide its Azure cloud service to back up Baidu's expansion in the international market. As part of the cooperation, both firms will look to collaborate further in telematics solutions to propel the digital transformation of the industry and provide users with a unique driving experience.

"Today's vehicles already have an impressive level of sophistication when it comes to their ability to capture data," said Kevin Dallas, Vice President of Microsoft. "By applying our global cloud AI, machine learning, and deep neural network capabilities to that data, we can accelerate the work already being done to make autonomous vehicles safer."

Baidu unveiled its Project Apollo in April, which hopes to provide an open software platform offering safe, comprehensive solutions for partners in the automotive and self-driving sectors. The platform already has more than 50 partners.

A reported released by McKinsey predicts that by 2030, 15 percent of new cars sold will be self-driving vehicles.
