(Yicai Global) Dec. 8 -- A Chinese start-up company committed to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) logistics deliveries recently announced it secured tens of millions in Series-A financing to promote the first UAV logistics delivery service for mass consumption worldwide, internet media outlet 36Kr.com reported.
Sequoia Capital China le this financing round for Hangzhou Xunyi Network Technology Co. (Ant Work), joined by Unity Ventures, an investor from its angel round.
After securing this investment, the company said it will unveil the Ant Work Express Delivery system by first coordinating with dozens of mid-to-high-end homestay owners, tourist attractions, homestay operators, hotels, and medical service providers in inaccessible areas.
Ant Work Express Delivery builds a 10 km-radius distribution circle around a service center, where any user can directly access this center by placing an order on the Ant Work Express Delivery page on the popular WeChat messaging app operated by Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HK:0700].
For deliveries, it uses self-developed UAVs able to carry goods weighing up to seven kilos and resist category-six winds. These automatically fly to and land at their destination after logging an order.
Homestay partners are required to provide a platform for the UAV to land on to ease the delivery and users' retrieval of their goods.
It will initially arrange this service in mountains and on islands, large bodies of water and other transport-inconvenient areas, and then expand the coverage to over 1,000 more sites in the coming year. It will also introduce the service for takeaways, fresh, medicine, e-commerce and other application scenarios citywide, and provide short-haul and fast distribution services.
The company formerly partnered with commercial institutions in the UAV distribution service, with such customers as China Post, Suning Commerce Group Co. [SHE: 002024], Cainiao, ZTO Express Cayman Inc. [NYSE:ZTO], Yunda Holding Co. [SHE:002120], and other domestic express companies. It has logged tens of thousands of kilometers of commercial flight mileage.
