(Yicai Global) May 22 -- The Chinese operators of Alipay and WeChat Pay said their cross-border e-payments business conforms with Nepal's laws and regulations after the country banned their use, online news outlet Sina Technology reported.

Ant Financial Services Group urged Alipay users to follow the rules and use an overseas version of the app, while Tencent Holdings said it has been using technology to crack down on illegal offshore payments, Sina reported. Overseas merchants should comply with local regulations, Tencent added.

Nepal Rastra Bank yesterday barred the mobile payment services, claiming that the South Asian country was losing foreign income due to the illegal use of the apps by Chinese tourists, The Himalayan Times reported.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Nepal topped 153,600 last year, an increase of 47 percent from 2017.
