(Yicai) April 12 -- Amazon’s China business will be included in the US e-commerce giant’s latest global layoff scheme.
“We have identified a few targeted areas of the organization we need to streamline to continue further investing in key strategic areas,” according to the screenshot of an email received by a staffer at Amazon China, 21st Century Business Herald recently reported. “As a result, we have made the difficult decision to reduce several hundred roles across specific sales, marketing, and global services organizations.”
Amazon China has not yet replied to the report, 21st Century Business Herald noted, adding that insiders believe the local layoff is part of the global reduction scheme of Amazon’s cloud computing arm Amazon Web Services.
On April 3, Amazon confirmed that AWS would let go staffers in the physical store, technology, sales, marketing, and global services divisions, as well as several hundred other employees.
Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 employees since the end of 2022. Its video livestreaming site Twitch, audiobook service provider Audible, the Buy With Prime program, streaming service Prime Video, film and television production and distribution studio MGM Studios, and other of Amazon’s divisions have already fired staff worldwide since the beginning of this year.
Amazon China has over 10,000 employees based in 12 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen, with corresponding businesses covering global shop opening, advertising, logistics, and cloud services.
