(Yicai Global) Oct. 23 -- Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA] will use chips produced by MediaTek Inc. [TPE:2454] in its upcoming smart speaker, and the parties will likely cooperate in the field of artificial intelligence products.

Alibaba plans to unveil its smart speaker in the middle of November, and MediaTek will provide the computing chip for the product's voice recognition functions, Ec.hc360.com reported. The new product is set to be Alibaba's second smart speaker equipped with a MediaTek chip since it released Tmall Genie in July.

Alibaba Cloud Computing Ltd., a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, is also expected to adopt MediaTek's product as its network chip. The collaboration has been on the table for at least six months and the parties are expected to disclose it soon.

This year, Alibaba Group introduced its voice assistant platform AliGenie as a basis for a series of smart speaker products it develops. The company is putting out intelligent hotel room products and may enter the unstaffed retail and aviation industries.

MediaTek, a world-renowned manufacturer of integrated circuits focusing on wireless communications and digital media, is headquartered in Taiwan. Its research teams cover mainland China, the United States, India, Japan and other countries and regions.
