(Yicai Global) Sept. 4 -- China's biggest e-commerce firm Alibaba Group Holdings has launched a scholarship program in collaboration with Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and the city state's Economic Development Board.

The program, open to Singaporean citizens and permanent residents, will provide tuition fees and a monthly SGD5,000 (USD3,600) stipend to students pursuing PhDs in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, Internet of Things, cloud computing, data analytics, cryptography, security or similar fields, the Hangzhou-based firm said in a statement. The first group of recipients will enroll at NTU next January and top-performing participants will have the chance to work for Alibaba in the future.

"Through this program…we want to identify and nurture the next generation of R&D talent from Singapore and further strengthen the research community here," Liu Xiangwen, senior director of Alibaba's Technology Strategy department commented. "Developing new and disruptive ideas is crucial, and we are committed to nurturing talent who would be the driving force of the next wave of technology innovation."

Scientists from Alibaba's DAMO Academy will also teach at the institutions as doctoral tutors to introduce AI, cloud computing, blockchain, Internet of Things and other technologies to Singapore's universities, Securities Times reported.

Program participants may also go to one of Alibaba's several laboratories for further study, including Alibaba-NTU Singapore Joint Research Institute and the company's headquarters.
