Alibaba Increases Stake in Southeast Asia's Major E-Commerce Platform Lazada by USD1 billion

(Yicai Global) June 28 -- Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) will invest nearly USD1 billion to raise its stake in Lazada Group SA, Southeast Asia's leading e-commerce platform, from 51 percent to about 83 percent, China's e-commerce giant and Lazada said in a joint statement today.

Alibaba would purchase the shares of certain Lazada shareholders at an implied total valuation of USD3.15 billion for the company, reflecting a significant increase in the value of Lazada since Alibaba first acquired its majority stake in April 2016.

With the planned shareholding increase, Alibaba's total investment in Lazada would exceed USD2 billion, while Lazada will continue to operate under the same brand.

The transaction demonstrates Alibaba's confidence in the growth potential of the Southeast Asian markets and its commitment to the region as part of its global strategy, said the statement.
